A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house is scheduled for Tuesday, May 30, at the new Eagle Bluff Apartments, 2803 Avenue A in Fort Madison. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and tour the facility.
Developed through a partnership between Heartland Properties Inc. and Burns and Burns L.C., Eagle Bluff is an affordable housing option for residents, age 62 or older. The one-story structure is located four blocks from the downtown area on a four-acre residential site.
In addition to the 48 one-bedroom apartment homes, the new development offers a community room and kitchen, hairstyling salon, exercise facility, library, mail center, laundry rooms, patios, and an arts and crafts area. The building also features emergency pull cords and a secured intercom entry system.
"Heartland Properties is proud of this important investment in the Fort Madison community," said Alliant Energy Resources Vice-President Tom Aller. "Eagle Bluff Apartments provide an affordable and convenient housing choice that will improve the quality of life in Fort Madison. We hope that developments like the one planted here will also grow in communities across the Alliant Energy service territory - communities as forward thinking and committed to growth as Fort Madison."
The Eagle Bluff development was made possible through an investment by Alliant Energy Resources, as well as financial support from the USDA Rural Development , Iowa Finance Authority, Iowa Department of Economic Development and the City of Fort Madison.
Eagle Bluff was constructed in two phases of 24 units each connected by a common community room. "Based on the strong community support and need for senior housing, we immediately began work on the second phase as soon as we broke ground for phase one. Already applications have been received for nearly half of the apartments," said Robert Burns of Burns and Burns, L.C., developer for Eagle Bluff.
Prior to construction, the State Historical Society and the University of Iowa supervised an archaeological dig on the western edge of Eagle Bluff. Several historic and archaic pieces were recovered and documented to the Early Woodland period in Iowa, dating from 1000 to 0 BC. The site has been recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
