Heartland Properties, Inc. was honored by the River City Society for Historic Preservation for its work on the Park Inn Hotel. At its annual meeting, the Society bestowed the Friend of Preservation Award on Heartland Properties as an organization that made a major contribution to historic preservation in Mason City.
The Park Inn, as the sole remaining hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, was recently acquired by Mason City and turned over the to Mason City Foundation to develop a plan for restoration. As noted by Dr. Robert McCoy, chairman of the Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House in Mason City, "We believe that Heartland, as an active agent working on the Park Inn Hotel, galvanized the community's awareness to the point of taking action. I am sure that without Heartland's effort and the support of Alliant Energy Resources, the property would still be languishing without prospect of restoration."
In presenting the award, Lee Weber, vice president of the River City Society for Historic Preservation commented, "In the past two years, Heartland Properties brought its talents and focus to bare on a long deferred project: the restoration of the Park Inn Hotel and City National Bank building. Through its efforts, more people in Mason City now understand the historic and aesthetic value of these properties than ever before. Heartland was the catalyst that helped Mason City see the value in forming an historic preservation commission as part of the city government and becoming a certified local government. In short, they've shone a strong light on this structure and allowed many to see what escaped their vision before: two unique buildings of international importance, right here in River City." Weber went on the say, "We of the River City Society for Historic Preservation want to thank Heartland Properties for constant leadership on this issue; for contagious belief in this project; and their generous good will."
The Park Inn was recently designated as a National Treasure by the Department of Interior and work to stabilize the roof and structure is underway using a Cultural and Tourism Grant from the Iowa legislature. In accepting the Friend of Preservation award, Dean Baumgardner, vice president of Heartland Properties, Inc. praised the community for the team of dedicated individuals and organizations that have been assembled to plan the future of the Park Inn. Baumgardner noted that, "The Park Inn is a treasure not only for Mason City but all of Iowa. Heartland Properties and Alliant Energy are proud to have played a role in creating a vision for this important cornerstone of Mason City's heritage."
