Community and business leaders will gather at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate a new $1.8 million housing complex in Carroll, Iowa. The complex, Monterey Point Apartments, provides high-quality, affordable housing for adults age 62 and older.
Monterey Point Apartments was developed by Burns & Burns, L.C. of Iowa City, Iowa, and was made possible through a $750,000 investment by Alliant Energy Resources through its affordable housing subsidiary, Heartland Properties, Inc. The city of Carroll, U.S. Department of Agriculture - rural development division, Iowa Finance Authority and the Iowa Department of Economic Development provided additional financial support.
Located at 822 Monterey Drive, Monterey Point is a brick, one-story facility that includes 24 one-bedroom apartment homes with private entrances. Each unit offers individually controlled heat and air conditioning, window blinds and a full-size kitchen and bath. A community room and centralized laundry facility are available for use by residents. Additionally, a grocery store and YMCA recreation center are nearby.
A tour, including refreshments, will be held immediately following the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Attending and providing brief comment will be Scott Fitzpatrick, Heartland Properties, Inc.; Robert Burns, Burns & Burns, L.C.; Margaret Saddoris, Alliant Energy; Monica Fischer, Iowa Finance Authority; Al Collet Iowa Department of Economic Development; Sue Wilhite, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Charlene Williams, Saint Anthony Regional Hospital Home Health Agency; and a representative from the city of Carroll.
According to Al Collet, project manager for the Iowa Department of Economic Development, affordable housing options are a necessity for Iowa's growing mature population and the overall economic well being of a community. "Initiatives like Monterey Point are driven by a need that is far outpacing development," says Collet. "We're pleased to have played a role in making this property a reality. It is a shining example of how public and private entities can share a common vision and partner to successfully meet the needs of Iowans."
Monterey Point is Heartland Properties' second housing initiative in Carroll. Meadow Wood Apartments, a 48-unit multi-family development, opened in summer of 2000. It is located at 1102 and 1106 Woodland Drive.
"We're proud to continue investing in the Carroll community and the state of Iowa," says Scott Fitzpatrick, Iowa housing manager for Heartland Properties. "Our focus is on providing housing solutions within America's Heartland. Each new development, whether it is housing for families, older adults or persons with disabilities, addresses long-term community needs and represents a unique and successful partnership. Monterey Point is a place people can be proud to call home."
