Heartland Properties, Inc., an Alliant Energy company, is hosting a series of one-day seminars across Iowa to assist communities in addressing local housing issues. The next seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, April 13, at the DMAC Center in Newton.
The workshop will address current housing issues facing Iowa communities, including the role of housing in economic development, an overview of statewide programs to support housing initiatives, the experience of successful non-profit housing agencies, and initiating innovative land planning. The seminar will also feature examples of how Iowa communities successfully addressed their housing issues, and what lessons they have for others.
"In Iowa today, having an adequate supply of affordable housing is a critical economic development issue," said Ruth Domack, president of Heartland Properties. "Housing supply, affordability and variety are essential not only for retaining and expanding a local business, but also are required for recruiting new sources of industry to an area. This workshop is designed to help local officials, developers, and housing professionals address these housing issues."
The keynote speaker will be Willis J. Goudy from Iowa State University. Professor Goudy will apply population and other census data relating to housing issues in Iowa communities. The workshop is planned for communities of all sizes and will also cover the planning process, resources available, and community success stories.
The luncheon speaker is Sue Martin, an executive with Maytag Corporation. Martin will discuss Maytag's roots in Newton and corporate involvement in community development. She will also lead a behind the scenes tour of the Maytag Training Center.
Other seminar locations include Burlington and Dubuque. For additional information about each workshop site and a workshop brochure, contact Kris Severson at 608-259-7389 or 800-942-4522.
