Awards for significant contributions to Mason City historic preservation were announced Tuesday at the annual meeting of the River City Society for Historic Preservation.
Heartland Properties, Inc., subsidiary of Alliant Energy, and Dean Baumgardner, the company's vice president, received the annual Friend of Preservation Award for their stimulation of interest in the restoration of the Frank Lloyd Wright Park Inn Hotel and City National Bank. Their "willingness and enthusiasm" to raise funds for restoration signaled to the community the national significance of the project and the possibility that it could be done, Society officials said, in a prepared statement.
"It can safely be said that without their interest, Mason City, under the leadership of the Mason City Foundation, would not presently be embarked on its project to restore the Park Inn Hotel to its 1910 appearance."
The Heritage Award was given to Terry Goepel and Craig Remmen for restoration of the 1903 Queen Anne house at 622 N. Jefferson Ave. "Today, this well-kept house, appropriately furnished with period furniture, recaptures the essence of its 1903 state."
A non-recurring award titled "Monumental Achievement in Preservation" was given to people and organizations playing significant roles in the restoration of the Civil War Monument in Central Park.
Honored were Henkel Construction Company for providing equipment and manpower to remove and re-erect the statue; the Mason City Community Development Department and its grant writer, Beth Enright, who secured the grant that made completion of the project possible; and many unnamed citizens who contributed financial support for the project.
"The monument is a credit to our community's concern for the success of our Nation's historic struggle for the Union and for those who gave their lives in that struggle," the Society said.
