A one-day workshop designed to assist communities in creating housing solutions will be presented Tuesday, April 11.
The program will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center in Austin, Minn. It is sponsored by the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, The Initiative Fund, Economic Partners for Southeastern Minnesota and Heartland Properties, Inc. Registration is open to the public.
Topics addressed at the workshop will include: Minnesota's changing population and issues affecting development; employer-assisted housing strategies; the State's Smart Growth initiatives; the experience of non-profit housing agencies; and, initiating innovative land-use planning.
The program will feature examples of how Minnesota communities have successfully addressed their housing issues and what lessons they have for others.
"A critical economic development issue in Minnesota today is the availability of affordable housing," said Ruth Domack, president of Heartland Properties. "Having adequate affordable housing options is essential for retaining and expanding a local business and also for recruiting new employers."
According to Domack, the one-day workshop is designed to help local officials, developers and housing professionals address today's important housing issues. "The power of this workshop lies in the partnerships supporting it. Our goal is for participants to walk away from this workshop with ideas and tools they can use to make their communities stronger."
At the workshop, Warren Hanson, president of the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, will roll out the new Minnesota Affordable Housing Development Guide. "Effective development planning is key to our state's Smart Growth initiative," said Hanson. "We encourage sound land-use planning and conservation as a strategy in preparing for future growth and population changes within our communities."
The cost of the workshop is $30 per person. The fee includes the workshop materials and lunch.
Heartland Properties Inc. sponsors high-quality affordable housing for families in the Midwest. Heartland Properties is a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Resources with a commitment to pursue financial, economic development and community partnerships.
