HPI and Banc One provided a $1.3 million investment in 641 West Main to kick-off redevelopment of the railroad corridor in downtown Madison, WI. The 60 unit multi-family development completed in 1993, is a three-story elevator apartment building. The mixed-income development has 37 Section 42 qualified apartments (62%). The remaining 23 units are market rate. There are seven efficiencies, 20 one-bedroom, 20 two-bedroom, 10 three-bedroom and 3 four-bedroom apartments. 641 West Main serves a large disabled population and young working families in the downtown area. Nineteen apartments offer barrier-free designs. An underground garage provides covered parking for 40 vehicles, with additional surface parking for 20 vehicles on the 1.6-acre site. Other amenities include a community room and playground.

 

Financing was made possible through Home Savings, WHEDA, Madison Community Development Authority and the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation. Improvements in the neighborhood continue with the completion of the UW Kohl Center, as well as retail and office centers.
