James Mann with the National Trust for Historic Preservation opened the conference with a keynote address on "Enhancing Communities through Historic Preservation." |
"Main Street Upper Stories... Pigeons or Profit" was the topic of Tim Reinders presentation from the Iowa Department of Economic Development. Tim offered detailed success stories on the adaptive reuse of downtown buildings for housing and office space. | ![]() |

A mobile workshop following the conference included a tour of Osada Apartments developed by the non-profit Mid-America Housing Partners. The unique housing for families in downtown Cedar Rapids was created in an abandoned food processing factory listed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
During the conference reception held at the historic Brucemore Mansion, Tom Aller, President of Alliant Energy Investments (right), presented Peggy Witworth, Director of Brucemore (left), with a contribtion of $1000 from Heartland to begin re-creation of the original landscaping on the grounds of the mansion. | ![]() |
